Tomato "Tomahawks"

The Story of Tomato Tomahawks
When European settlers first discovered these artifacts, they mistakenly assumed that these stick-and-rock objects were primitive weapons of violence that had been used against animals and enemies. In fact, however, the Fluxus Indians used these weighted stakes as garden poles for growing tomatoes and beans.

The five "Tomato Tomahawks" displayed here are re-creations that have been used in several summers of tomato growing by members of the modern-day Fluxus Midwest. These five Tomato Tomahawks have now been acquired by the Fluxus Indian Museum, Coon Rapids, Iowa, and were subsequently offered for public sale on October 7, 2009.

Official Museum Tag
Each Tomato Tomahawks comes with an official Fluxus Indian Museum tag. Tags are rectangular and vary in size from 3.5 to 4.5-inches wide to 5 to 5.5-inches tall. Two different 2 x 3-inch, durable, inkless photos are sewn to the front and back of a piece of red vinyl cut from the seat pad of an old toboggan. One photo captures the block of the tomato tomahawk and the other image presents the official Fluxus Indian Museum title and seal for this project.
