Self-Performance Art
Make-Your-Own (Wearable) Art
Installation & Performance

7 - 10 pm, Friday, May 25th, 2007, Arcite, Windsor, Ontario

One of the original aspirations of both New Wave Psychology and Fluxus Midwest was to be a force to stimulate people to be more creative...to help people exercise their own creativity. From the start, most of these efforts were quite successful (e.g., a mail-art workshop we ran in one of the social psychology classes we taught). During the late 1980's Fluxus Midwest set up "self-performance creativity" tables at a variety of popular-culture and art events in Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. We offered the people attending these events the tools, the materials, and the encouragement to create their own "wearable art," rubber stamps, and/or Holiday-greeting cards. These DIY-creativity activities were always very successful: lots of people participated (enough to keep us extremely busy) and those who did so did so with a lot of positive energy.

In 2007, we recreated one of these DIY-creativity activities at the opening celebration of Artcite's 25th Birthday --adding new tools and materials (e.g., digital camera, computer, printer, a metal button press that we didn't have in the past). Although we hadn't staged one of these installations/performances in quite a few years, we were once again inspired by the fun and creative energy this activity unleashed.
