FLUXUS Midwest
CHAIR WALK
HOMAGE TO PLATFORM VOYAGE
Platform Voyage: sculpture and performance. On Saturday noon, 19 September 1998, Ward Shelley, William R. Kaizen, and Ole Olaussen climbed on top of a 120-square-foot platform/sculpture they had built--and began to slowly move the sculpture along as they continuously rebuilt it. Six days later, at 5:13 PM on Friday, 25 September--without ever touching the ground--the trio had moved their sculpture 600 feet across Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, Queens, New York. While following this event over the internet, Allen Bukoff (Acting Director, FLUXUS Midwest) remembered how as a young boy he had used a train of chairs to move through the house--without ever touching the floor. On Sunday, 27 September 1998, Allen walked out the front door of his house, carried three chairs to the sidewalk at the end of his block in Birmingham, Michigan, and embarked on his own block-long voyage of discovery and performance.
